ABOUT THE HAND PAINTING PROCESS
Each product is carefully hand painted by our skilled and talented artisans.
The design process begins in London where the initial hand painted patterns are sampled and trialed. These are then carefully practiced and copied by the skilled team of artists in Ha Noi, Vietnam.
ABOUT THE LACQUER PROCESS / SON MAI LACQUER
Son Mai lacquer is an ancient and specalised technique that is still produced in Vietnam today. The nature of these hand made items means each piece is truely unique.
The base of the product is made from wood, the first step is applying layers of Sinh, which is a type of glue to protect and strenghten the wooden base.
The next step is applying a natural lacquer mixed with applying a thin layer of clay, the clay is a mixture of delta river soil and mud.
Each layer is left to dry and then sanded down. More layers of lacquer are applied, this can be applied and sanded down up to 20 times to achieve the desired effect. Finally the colour is applied and hand painted details, these too are sanded down in the same way and polished.
